Improve the performance of optical imaging systems by modeling and measuring the coherence properties of light returned from objects of interest and adjacent objects not of interest. Applications for this research include biomedical imaging, material science, and remote sensing. Current projects include improving the performance and specificity of reflectance confocal microscopy in clinical applications.

Global Election Systems, Accuvote, Optical Mark Sensor for Elections, Managed overall sensor design and developed patented electro-optic sensor for research prototypes and commercial units. Sensor is the most widely used optical ballot scanning technology used in the United States. This sensor was the most accurate (3x more accurate than the next system) voting system in Florida during the 2000 election. Currently viewed as having the lowest error rate in the country. Florida commission reviewing the 2000 Presidential Election recommended this technology for all Florida’s election equipment. A Caltech/MIT report recommended upgrading the nation’s voting system with this type of voting system. Total production currently stands at over 15,000 units. System now called AccuVote-OS and is manufactured and distributed by by Diebold Elections Systems.
Light Source/ X-rite: Colortron I and Colortron II and IIc, Hand-held spectrophotometer, Developed patented optics and optomechanics for research prototypes and commercial units. Winner of the 1995 Graphics Arts Technical Foundation InterTech Award to honor excellence in technology. Total production 16,000 units.
