A non-linear rate equation describing superfluorescence in many-level
systems is presented. It is shown that when a large atomic population is
excited into Rydberg levels the cascade back to lower levels by cooperative
spontaneous emission leads to a number of new effects including "trapping"
of population in excited states, alteration of branching ratios, truncation
of superfluorescent pulses and multiple pulsing of a single transaction.
